My ladies in waiting and I were sitting in a garden, sipping tea. I felt awkward since everyone was so quiet. For instance, each of these women is attractive and distinct;
Lady Olivia appears to be the youngest of the three, at only 16 years. Her smile is beautiful, and her youth most likely gives a refreshing and energetic spirit to the gathering.
Lady Catherine, with her brunette beauty, must be going through a difficult period following her divorce. It’s understandable that she’s looking for a new relationship, and hopes she finds someone who will provide her happiness and stability.
Lady Helena, on the other hand, stands out as the mature and elegant one among the ladies. It’s intriguing that she’s about to be engaged to an unknown knight. Her calmness and acceptance of the situation suggest that she may have a strong sense of duty or a trusting nature.
It’s lovely that each of these ladies brings their unique qualities and personalities to the group, So I opted to break the ice in order to get to know them personally.
“So Lady Olivia, tell me what do you do on your free time? ” I asked as I sip my cup of tea.
Lady Olivia blushed slightly,She replied with a soft smile, “Well… I do like tea ” she said shyly
“Oh..well…umm… anything else that you like to do aside drinking tea?”
“well I.. ” she replied
“Olivia, you’re such a dimwitt, that’s not what the Queen meant,” Catherine lashed as Olivia bowed her head in shame.
” It’s alright Olivia, I am sorry if I asked and I am sure you find something that you will be interested with “
She replied with a soft smile, “It’s alright your Majesty…. well, I do enjoy spending time in the garden, much like today. The beauty of nature calms my heart. Besides that, I also like painting and drawing. It’s a way for me to express my feelings and capture the world’s beauty on paper.”
“That sounds lovely,” I said, genuinely interested. “Painting and drawing are wonderful ways to connect with your creative side; have you ever considered displaying or sharing the pieces you make with others?”
Lady Olivia’s eyes twinkled with a mixture of delight and shyness. “Oh, no, I hadn’t thought of that; I’m quite shy about my art, and I usually keep it to myself.”
“It’s completely understandable,” I reassured her. “However, based on what you’ve told me, I have a feeling your art is truly captivating, and perhaps, in time, you’ll gain the confidence to share it with others; many people would appreciate your talents.”
Lady Olivia blushing even more, yet she seemed grateful. “Thank you very much, your Majesty; it means a lot to me.”
“Your welcome,” I replied, my response demonstrates empathy for Lady Olivia’s feelings and reassures her that it’s acceptable to not have specific hobbies worked out yet. Changing the subject to Lady Catherine’s hobbies is a sensible way to keep the conversation going and everyone feeling involved.
“and how about you, Lady Catherine? What are your interests?” I asked
“Oh, I do have a variety of interests! Apart from my love for dressing up and indulging in the finest things, I enjoy horseback riding; there’s something exhilarating about the feeling of freedom when galloping through the countryside,” Lady Catherine responds with enthusiasm.
“That sounds absolutely thrilling,” I respond, clearly interested in her activity. “Horseback riding must allow you to explore and appreciate the beauty of nature in a unique way; do you ride in the countryside frequently?” I inquired.
“Indeed, it’s one of my favourite activities; the countryside offers such picturesque landscapes and tranquil surroundings; it’s an escape from the maddening pace of court life,” Lady Catherine nods.
” I apologise for asking, but why did your ex-husband leave you?” I wondered.
“No, your grace, he didn’t leave me… I left him… because he became very poor… ” she laughed.
Lady Catherine appears to have a sense of humour regarding her previous relationship, which she shares in a lighthearted tone. Lady Catherine is at ease joking about her decision to divorce her ex-husband owing to financial reasons. I thought to myself as I smiled at her.” Well, it sounds like you made the best decision for yourself at that time. Life takes us on unexpected journeys, doesn’t it?”
“Yes, you’re absolutely right… your Majesty,” she replied.
“How about you, Lady Helena? you’re awfully quiet,” I inquired.
“I apologise for being quiet; I am more reserved in front of people, but I am listening…” she responded with a gentle grin.
“That’s completely understandable,” I say, smiling. “We all have our own ways of socialising, and there’s nothing wrong with being more reserved. We’re glad to have you here with us; is there anything in particular you enjoy?”
“I do enjoy reading poetry and books,” she says hastily.
“That’s wonderful,” I say, genuinely interested in her love of reading. “Reading is such a wonderful hobby that opens up endless possibilities for exploration; have you recently come across any particularly captivating pieces?” I inquired.
Helena inquired, “What do you mean, your grace?”
“Like romance and…. a-adventure?” I said.
“Oh… I only read the bible, politics, and history books, my Queen,” Helena replied.
“Wow… that is deep…” I remarked, taking a sip of my tea with an awkward smile.
“So, my queen,” Catherine interjected, “where did you meet King Baldwin?”
“In… a banquet,” I replied. “It was a wonderful encounter,” I smiled. “There was an instant connection between us the moment we met,” I go on to say.
“And the King, how is he? I’ve only heard stories about him being wise and cruel,” Olivia innocently inquires.
“Good Lord! he is not cruel, where did you hear that?” I exclaimed. “He has a warm and charming personality,” I continued, “and we discovered many shared interests, including our love for art and literature. From that moment on, our friendship blossomed, and over time, it grew into something more.”
Philippa’s eyes twinkled with wonderful recollections, and she couldn’t help but smile as she recalled everything they did together.
Olivia and the other ladies in waiting were fascinated by the romantic story and listened carefully. “It sounds like a story from a fairy tale,” Olivia said, smiling.
“Yes, it truly feels like a dream come true,” I remarked, my voice bright with delight. “Being married to him is a blessing, and I couldn’t be happier to share my life with someone as kind and caring.”
“Pardon me, your grace, for asking, did you already consummate your marriage? knowing you’re still on your honeymoon, and yet the King is quite busy on the crusade,” Catheriine asked.
“By consummate… do you mean sex?” I clarified.
“S-sex?” she asked, puzzled.
“I mean, if we did the martial thing in bed,” I said.
“Yes… your Majesty,” she responded.
“Well… that kind of intimate…” I commented.
“That is rude! Lady Catherine, of course they did it,” Olivia interjected, “they are married, and it’s obvious.”
” Hush it… Olivia… ” Catherine Silence Olivia ” Remember, we are her Majesty’s ladies in waiting, and we are here to support her in any way we can “
“Lady Catherine is right,” Lady Helena responded. “Your Majesty, you may have married to the king in front of the church and thy people, but not by nobility law,” she said.
“What do you mean?” I inquired.
Helena pauses before adding, “As Queen, your role is critical in securing the kingdom’s future; your marriage to King Baldwin brings with it certain expectations, one of which is ensuring the birth of an heir.”
As I look at and listen to Helena, I remain silent.
Helena maintains a composed demeanour as she addresses the probable problems ahead. “While I know you are dedicated to your duties and your desire to fulfil your role as Queen is unwavering, it’s important to acknowledge that the pressure to produce an heir can sometimes lead to uncertainties and concerns among those in the court.”
She pauses for a bit to allow me to process her remarks before continuing. “Some may regard your position as vulnerable, particularly if there are delays in bearing an heir; it is a reality of our world, where the stability of the monarchy is frequently linked to the continuation of the royal lineage.”
“I want you to know, Your Majesty, that we are here to support you in any way possible. and from what Ive heard, you posses the strength, intelligence, and dedication that make you an exceptional Queen.” Helena says.
I react in a controlled yet resolute tone after a period of serious stillness.
“Lady Helena, I appreciate your candour and willingness to discuss this matter with me,” I begin, my gaze steady as I meet Helena’s. “I recognise the importance of securing the kingdom’s future, and I am fully aware of the responsibilities that come with my role as Queen.”
“While the pressure to produce an heir is significant,” I continue, “I want you to know that my commitment to the welfare of the kingdom and its people remains unwavering. I take my responsibilities seriously, and I will do everything in my power to fulfil my duties as both a Queen and a wife.”
I spoke it with determination and resolve. “I believe that the strength of our monarchy is found not solely in bloodlines, but in the values, leadership, and unity that we uphold; my love and support for King Baldwin, our marriage, and the well-being of our kingdom are all important to me.”
“Rest assured, Lady Helena, that I am ready to face any challenges that may arise,” I replied, as the ladies returned the smile.
As the afternoon progressed, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the company of my ladies in waiting. Their laughter and camaraderie created a joyful atmosphere, making me feel at ease despite the responsibilities that came with my new role as Queen. It was refreshing to connect with them on a personal level and to learn more about their lives and interests.
