Chapter 7
Author’s note:
Hello lovely readers!! :DD
This is the final installment to my short story, ‘Mirror Mirror. It feels rather……unreal?? Idk but I am so very grateful for lovely people like yourself who gave me the chance to put out something of such great importance to me in the world and cherished it as much as I cherished the experience of writing it!
Now go and enjoy your dose of misogyny and Theron being insufferable as today I put an end to your suffering.
Do stick around for more and leave your little thoughts and comments for me to giggle at! <3333
………………
I surely did not expect to see such mayhem littering the palace floors.
So the rumors were true?
The queen has, in fact, gone mad beyond saving, and even now the mere sight of her is enough to prove the whispers slithering like Medusa’s snakes through her kingdom.
She’s pacing— and, gods above, the sight sends a jolt of thrill through me.
I orchestrated this devastating game.
I am the one who will wield triumph in my bare hands, in every sense of the word.
I—the one in power. I, the man.
My footsteps echo— no, crunch is the better word here. Each step finalizes my last move and my imminent victory as shards of already-broken glass are shattered to mere smithereens underneath my feet.
The queen’s beloved possessions are quite literally kissing my feet.
Shoe-clad feet, might I add. Shining, squeaky clean black leather.
I did not bother weighing my self-esteem down by worrying about how many coins I had to pay the shoemaker for these.
After all, it is soon that an unimaginable amount of those same coins will be quite literally dancing on my fingertips.
Time slows to a blissful crawl as my eyes connect with the wide blue-green ones in the corner of the hall.
Terror and disbelief lick at the very essence of her being— a fear so potent I can smell the rotting odor from where I stride over to my glimmering future.
No more living in a shaggy hut where the windows shudder with every breath of wind this earth takes.
No more having scorpions and all other hideous beings that crawl onto earth from Hades’ realm burrow with me beneath my sheets.
Just the thought sends shivers of disgust up my spine.
And if I’m so lucky— no more watching a measly woman rule over me and the people of Argos, though that won’t be much of a problem to me since I’ll leave Argos whenever I deem it safe if that gullible doll in the corner ever decides to open her mouth to spit out her truth.
The queen’s sharp gaze connects with mine, and sparks fly through my soul, electrocuting every bone in my body.
Holy heavens, she is magnificent.
Even now, with her face crumpled into an ugly shade of wrath, so at odds with how she looked when I saw her in the gardens, she still manages to look like the most damning, breathtaking deity.
She asks me my name and purpose, and I revel in the sound of her smooth voice before letting the rehearsed lines spill from my mouth:
“My name is Theron, and I have come to share the name of the traitor who stole your mirror, but also return it to you.”
She’s in front of me so fast that I barely get to glance at horror seeping into every pore of Callista’s face.
The queen’s scent fills my nose— everything sharp and maddeningly distracting, with a hint of some kind of flower which would no doubt be a poisonous one.
The desperation in her voice lights up the inside of my chest into vibrant shades of gold and gleaming purple.
This. This is where she and every other woman belong. At the feet of a man— begging for her… for her everything.
The hypnotizing connection snaps when I take a deep, exhausted sigh and spill out another one of the lines I spent hours reciting in front of the cracked mirror in my shed of a house.
“With regret, Your Highness— it was your head chambermaid. I caught her this morning. She begged me to sell the mirror, swore she’d split the coin. But I knew you deserved better. So here I am. Loyal. Honest.”
The queen’s head snaps towards Callista with such frightening efficiency that I brace to watch the bone snap.
And now I finally get to see a good look at the face of the woman I betrayed.
She still has those stupid freckles splattering her nose, the same freckles which made me feel bad for whatever man has her, because surely she’d be much better with clear, unmarred skin.
She still has the same lashes framing her blue-green eyes, which would do her much good if they were slightly longer.
And those same lips, which were always much too thin for my liking.
Though the perpetual happiness she always carried in every blink of her eyes and every word spewed from her lips is less than a mere trail of the past at the moment.
Every inch of her face is thoroughly doused in tangible fear as she begins sputtering out her reasoning— tripping over her own salvation just like I had anticipated.
So I do what I do best. I cut her off. It’s not as if anything a woman has to say is of more importance than what I have to say.
“My gold? Highness, and would you like your mirror back?”
A smirk tugs at the corners of my lips, but I smother it before it blows my cover.
“Yes, yes, of course,” Queen Zailah murmurs, seeming like a rabid animal as I pull out the heavy gilded mirror from the pocket of my vest and hand it over to her.
Well, more like she snatches it from me, and the sigh of relief that escapes her plump lips once her eyes clash with her own in the mirror is almost comical.
Almost.
Because what is more comical is the look of utter betrayal and foreboding on Callista’s face as the queen’s men hand me a heavy chest.
Holy coins of Plutus.
It’s small, but heavy nonetheless.
And with a final bow to the queen, I conclude this little show I directed and finally let my lips pull into the thinnest, barely-there smile towards the marionette I controlled all along.
Well— this was rather easy, wasn’t it?
Though as I walk out of the palace towards my new life, I hear a shattering noise of something and an agonizing scream leave the queen’s mouth.
Well— I’d certainly be lying if I said that womankind wasn’t entertaining to peer at when it was miserable.
