At the end of a summer day, and without any previous signs, light gray clouds started covering the clear sky. Soon, droplets of rain surprised the people returning from work and school, they quickly used their hands or bags to shield their heads as they started running towards the comfort of their own homes; while those who didn’t have one, stared at the sky wondering where they could spend the upcoming night. Those empty eyes didn’t seem to notice the huge white wings hidden behind the clouds, disappearing in the blink of an eye; heading to an unknown destination high in the sky.
After noticing an unfamiliar red sign from a distance, the white wings seemed to slow down and gradually get smaller while approaching it. Near the “NO FLYING” sign appeared a young man wearing a black suit, he looked at it for a while and walked toward the majestic building in the top of the hill in front of him. He entered through the main door that had another reminder to not fly written on it, circled around for a while then headed to the third floor. His light footsteps started getting louder while approaching to notify the one staying there of his arrival.
“You know you don’t have to do that, you told me that you were coming.”, a voice spoke to the visitor that was still on the stairs.
” Well, it is because there’s in no door to knock. “, the man shrugged with a helpless expression on his face.
He finally stopped at the entrance of the floor, in front of him, was the room of scripts that occupied the whole third floor, enormous cabinets reaching to the ceiling were all around the place, full of documents, scrolls and books… ; about all kinds of subjects an employee from the resented souls department could possibly need.
However, the most noticeable thing when entering the room was not the mesmerizing paintings hung on the walls nor the burning incense that calms and soothes both the mind and the soul from the first breath; it was the desk beside the nearest window to the entrance. A gorgeous young lady with a long golden hair was trying to organize the mess that ruined the charm of the room.
When he entered she gave up and left the mess as it is, “Welcome Razel, please have a seat. “
Then she realized that the seat she was pointing at, had some documents on it , she tried to remove them but he disagreed: ” I prefer to stay standing, what is with the sign ? “
“After some thinking we found that is better to stop flying from there rather than in front or inside of the building; when the windows are opened the wind make everything fall on the floor, and no one wants to close their windows all day to prevent that anymore. ” she addend silently : ‘and because their real appearances scares most of the newbies so to avoid the chaos and the screams of terror, I came up with this genius idea.’
“What is so important that needs me to come all the way up here ? “
The responsible of the room smiled and said: “I have some news, I will let you decide if they’re good or bad. “ “Get to the point I have better things to do.”
“Razel, you already know there is a huge increase of resented souls lately and we need some help to get the work done, so the higher-ups suggested we get new employees. Jacob brought them yesterday, they are still learning the basics and… ” she tried to summarise the news in one breath but failed; he interrupted her the moment he noticed something wrong.
“Learning the basics? Why? They are supposed to know most of the things, just some differences between our department and theirs need to be revised. And how is that related to me anyway? I am going back to get my work done. “
The responsible hesitated when she saw him about to leave then started talking quickly :”Wait! The thing is ..um the employees are some dim souls that wanted to help, other departments busy too so they couldn’t send anyone.”
Razel frowned, kept silent for a while and said: “What can some ignorant souls do, Grace? it’s going to be a disaster to let them go look for those souls on their own.”
Grace closed her eyes, took a deep breath to gather some courage: “About that…that’s why everyone in the department will be paired with a trainee, they are just going to “assist” not try to do the impossible and cause more chaos. I called you so you could meet your soon to be partner to break the ice, before starting to work together. “
“You could have explained in two sentences rather than taking ages and waste my time.”
She looked at him and smiled awkwardly, while complaining silently ‘maybe if you were not looking at me with eyes thinking of breaking something other than the door this time I wouldn’t have to go through all this’, then said: “I apologize for my inefficiency, why don’t you go to the fourth floor to meet him right now? Jacob is there too; he is supervising the newbies to make sure they are not procrastinating, he will introduce him to you.”
“Give your poor assistant a break, you always give him weird tasks. Anyway, thank you for urgently calling me in the middle of a mission. Please make sure there would be no next time.” He smiled politely and headed toward the next floor.
Grace sighted in relief while looking at his back, and took a sip of the tea that became cold because she didn’t dare to drink it while he is looking at her with those cold and deep gray eyes; she was afraid she will choke on it. She hoped her assistant will be able to convince him of training the newbie before he scares the poor soul away .
On his way, Razel started thinking of ways to deal with this trainee, it’s not the first time the department hires souls as temporary employees, last time a couple of them helped with the documents in the room of scripts. In his opinion, this assistance will just make things worse; at least for him, all of this was because the death department and the afterlife department were busy? Couldn’t send anyone? More like refused to in order to keep playing around. But no need to get agitated, he will make sure to return this favor to them in the future .
